A beautiful ambrotype photo which sits behind glass in a brass, wood, fabric, and tooled leather box frame. There is a hinge on the side of the frame that would have originally kept the lid closed.
In my research this photo was taken by James Bowman at his photo studio which was located at 65 Jamaica St. in Glasgow, Scotland. Certain elements of the photo were hand tinted. This is antique from the 1850s time range, possibly from the beginning of the 1860s.
I would leave the frame with the photo as-is, but of course you could take out the photo and use the frame without it.
