I think it makes a very charming planter pot but it could also be used as a fruit bowl or for bread rolls. I found similar looking tureens by the same maker in different patterns and they were dated as being made between 1886-1901.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis factory in Portugal only made earthenware for a very short window of time, from 1885 until the factory closed in 1924. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe feel of earthenware is very similar to ironstone but perhaps not as heavy. This is a very solid and sturdy piece, though.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom handle to handle the tureen measures 11\" across. Just the mouth opening is 8.25\" by 6.25\".
