I went to an estate sale happening out of the church building formerly known as Alberton Presbyterian Church, which is in Alberton, Ontario, and was built in 1878. Alberton is just outside of Hamilton in the countryside by Ancaster. The church became vacant last year and it was recently purchased to be turned into a mosque. The new owners were selling off the items from the church.

The gorgeous print sits behind glass in an ornate, gold, wood frame. There is a wire on the back for hanging and it looks like the paper backing and wire for hanging were added at a later time by a professional framing company (likely in 1973, when the picture was gifted to the church. They probably had the picture re-framed because they wanted to add the white card which you see in the bottom left corner). The frame and the picture inside are much older, and are antique from the 1800s.

White card in left corner: In Memory Of David Richardson, Ancaster, Ontario in whose possession it was before the year 1848. Donated by his grand-daughter Mrs. Percy Baker, Alberton on November 21st, 1973.

18.5" by 24.5"

Since the print says 1882 and the card says 1848, I wasn’t sure if this was a mistake or perhaps the frame (1848) is older than the print (1882). Regardless, this is an antique piece from at least 1882.

History of David Richardson: There is quite a bit of historical information to be found about this famous Ancaster, Ontario resident. He immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1836, lived in the Trinity Road area of Ancaster, and was a farmer and land owner.

In 1872-3, he built a home on his land as a wedding gift for his son, Dr. Henry Richardson. The home still stands today and is known as the Richardson Farmer Ashworth House, or Sunny Side, and is located at 343 Wilson Street East. Although it has been lived in by several residents, it is now currently home to The Spa at Ancaster and is a historical/heritage building.
