Armando de Mexico Redware Pottery Colima Dog Replica Effigy Vessel
Armando de Mexico Redware Pottery Colima Dog Replica Effigy Vessel
Colima is a region of Mexico where they have a distinct style of art and pottery. These hollow vessels were made in different shapes but the most commonly portrayed figure was that of a dog, which would assist the dead as they journeyed to the underworld. Dogs were also central figures in myths and stories believed and told by Colima's ancient inhabitants.
The dog is made from unglazed pottery and is terracotta red with black speckles. It is hollow inside with the opening in the tail. This is a replica of the effigy vessels they would have used in ancient times.
There are some slight scuffs here and there on the surface of the pottery. See photos.
Signed on the bottom: Armando de Mexico (Armando of Mexico)
10" long from tail to nose, 6.25" tall and about 5.5" wide at the widest point
