There is a video at the end of the photo gallery.

There is a tiny speck of glaze missing on the lip of the bigger dish side, a teeny fleck where you can see the clay underneath. See photo gallery to where I point it out.

Guido Gambone (1909-1969) is known as one of the most influential ceramists of the mid-20th century. You can find his pieces in museums, galleries, and in private collections worldwide.

Between 1939 to 1950 he shared a studio with his brother and their friend in Vietri, Italy. In 1950, he moved to Florence and opened his own studio (La Terrena) which would remain open until 1967, closing two years before his death.

At La Terrena, Gambone began adding the donkey marking to his pieces.

I have done hours of research on his pieces and am fairly certain that he didn’t make duplicates of items. I found some other divided bowls and also found other pieces that were done in this yellow/brown line style but no other divided bowls done in this style. This is a one of a kind piece and Gambone’s pottery, especially pieces stamped with the donkey marking, are extremely valuable and sought after, selling for high prices online.

The other pieces of pottery that were done in this style (yellow with brown lines) were listed as being made in the 1950s (one was 1959) so I am assuming this one was also made in the 1950s as well.

There are faint pink undertones to the glaze and this dish is wonderfully stunning. It has a beautiful weight and texture to it. You can feel the quality when you hold it.

Gambone was known for making beautiful yet functional pieces so perhaps this bowl was originally meant as an olive dish, where you could put whole olives on one side and the pits on the other.

Stamped: Donkey Marking / Gambone / Italy

8" long by 5.25" across the bigger dish side and 4.25" across the smaller dish side. The bigger dish side is 2" deep and the smaller dish side is 1.5" deep.
